About the Bahamas
The Bahamas is an archipelago consisting of over 700 islands and was the first land Christopher Columbus set foot on when he discovered the new world. The name "Bahamas" comes from the Spanish phrase, baja mar, meaning shallow sea.
The Bahamas begin just off the east coast of Florida and cascade down to the eastern tip of Cuba and northern Haiti. They are mainly flat coral islands with just a few gentle hills; the highest point in the entire country is just 206 ft.
Nassau, on the island of New Providence, is the county’s capital, acting as a hub from which the other island groups, known as the Out Islands, are supported. The Out Islands consist of The Abacos, Grand Bahama, Bimini, The Berry Islands, Andros, Eleuthera,
the Exumas, Long Island, Cat Island, San Salvador and Rum Cay, Acklins and Crooked Island, Mayaguana, and Inagua.
Despite the shared topography, each island group is uniquely different, offering visitors different experiences throughout the Bahamas. The best way to explore the Bahamas is by boat or small plane, starting in Nassau and working out from there. Sample
Bahamian city life by spending a few days in the major port city of Nassau. Filled with its duty free shops, golf, museums and restaurants, there is no shortage of activities. If romance is what you seek, sit back and relax on the pristine white sand
of Long Island's deserted beaches or the pink sand beach of Eleuthera’s Harbour Island. If adventure is your game, dive the challenging wreck sites off the coast of San Salvador or snorkelling the clearest waters in the world in the Exumas Cays. Love
nature? Then head to Inagua National Park to witness the spectacle of nesting flamingos and other exotic wildlife.
From mega-resorts to charming villas, city life to off the grid seclusion--the Bahamas have something for everyone. While each island is different and offers unique experiences, one thing they all have in common is friendly welcoming people and world
famous blue water and beaches.
