Weekends are precious, especially in the winter when the kids aren’t on school holiday and all you want to be is warm and out of the grip of Jack Frost. Cancun, Mexico is one of those easy fly-in destinations that will get you nice and toasty, give you that beach fix you crave, and have you back to work and the kids in school on Monday morning. There are loads of things to do if you aren’t up for sitting on the beach all day, and every one of them will give your kids stories to wow their friends with.
First things first, you need a place to stay. The Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach and Fiesta Americana Condesa are two easy choices if you want family fun and flexibility. The Grand Fiesta has one of the largest spas in Mexico, which is perfect for moms looking for a bit of time off and away from the kids while dad takes the kids to the pool. Both resorts have stellar kids clubs for your children to meet new friends while you relax by the pool or do a little shopping in town.
While the Grand Fiesta is an a la carte hotel with plenty of restaurants onsite and just steps away in the heart of Cancun, the Fiesta Americana Condesa is all-inclusive, which means you don’t have to worry about where to eat and what’s included in your stay.
The beach may be all you want to see while you are in Cancun, but if you need to add a little adventure to your trip, there are plenty of historical and natural sights within a few hours drive or boat ride. The ancient Mayan city of Tulum is a two-hour drive from Cancun, but definitely worth the trip. Explore these ancient ruins that sit on one of the best beaches in the area. Close by you can explore a cenote, a clear, fresh water, swimming hole that is great for snorkeling, scuba diving or just cooling off after hiking around Tulum all morning.
Speaking of snorkeling, you can access one of the best spots to snorkel on the Yucatan peninsula from the island of Cozumel. You will need to take the ferry from Playa del Carmen (about an hour from Cancun) and then hop on a catamaran to get you out to the reef. The journey is worth the day trip to see this underwater tropical paradise up close. If you are in town June through September, you can also swim with the whale sharks that pop down for the season. Just make sure you research the tour company you go with very carefully. Boats that limit the number of people who can be in the water at one time are best as this cuts down on the stress to the animals you have come to see.
Getting away for a week or a weekend in Cancun is easy to do. When winter has got you down, or you just have to see those whale sharks, book your flights and pack up the kids. You deserve this break and you have no more excuses not to go.
