Halloween is fast approaching and that means it is time for the annual trek to the pumpkin patch. While you may already know what makes the best pumpkin patch for you and your family (apple cider donuts, pumpkins on the vine, and hot cider), we've gathered up a list of our favorite pumpkin patches and festivals in the Mid-Atlantic region (Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia). Stop searching for the best spot. We've done the work for you, and boy are we excited to hit a few more this year.
Families looking for a quiet weekend of apple and pumpkin picking can head to Styers Orchard in Langhorne, PA. The apple cider donuts are fresh and kids will love exploring the corn maze. Unlike other pumpkin picking farms, Styers keeps it low-key, so families with smaller children don’t get trampled and parents can get those photos without massive crowds around them.
Pumpkinland appears every autumn, creating a wonderland of harvest-themed fun. Get lost in the straw bale and cornfield mazes. Take a train ride, pony ride or hayride. Pick your own apples, grab a pumpkin and participate in the annual Costume Parade. No matter how you do it, you will have fun in Pumpkinland.
Pumpkin picking is important, but so is entertaining your kids when you are making a day trip to the patch. Fifer Orchards has it all with apple and pumpkin picking, fresh cider, apple cider donuts, and the Corn Maze Fun Park. Families can enjoy the six-acre corn maze, straw slides, bee line swings, pumpkin painting, tractor train rides, pony rides and face painting during their stay. Just don’t forget to grab your pumpkins for the house before you leave all the fun!
Low key fun and a corn maze carved into a map of the world not only make the drive to Ramsey’s Farm easy, but also one of the most highly anticipated day trips of the year for some families. Plan on getting lost in the maze before you pick your pumpkins so you can learn about agriculture, farmers and food from around the world as you walk. Pumpkin painting, a hay play area and hay rides will round out your trip before you load up on gourds to carve at home.
One of the best farms in Maryland can be found just outside of Washington, D.C. Wander into the pumpkin patch to pick out your perfect pumpkin, before heading into the shop to load up on apples and fresh, hot apple cider donuts. If you need a bit more fun in your day, go to the Pumpkin Festival, where you can zoom down giant slides, play corn hole, jump in the hayloft, wander the Twisted Corn Maze and take a hayride.
A creamery, U-Pick orchard and pumpkins make this farm a dream trip for families who want to overindulge in some local goods. The nine-acre corn maze will help you walk off a few of those calories you just inhaled, while Pumpkin Chuckin will have you and your kids laughing all the way home. Best of all, you can actually control the pumpkin cannon and try to get your pumpkin on the target. Don’t worry about those smashed pumpkins. The local cows are happy to eat them for you.
When you think of the beach you don’t really think pumpkins, but Virginia Beach has them and can’t wait to show you what else they’ve got. Cut your perfect pumpkin right off the vine, not something that every farm offers these days. Parents can sit back and relax as their kids explore the Children’s Play Area with a pipe tunnel, sand pile, corn stalk tunnel, teepee, wooden toys and life-size board games. Half hour wagon rides are available on the weekends so you can see the farm and learn more about the importance of small farmers for our food production.
Pumpkin bowling may not be on your list of things to do this weekend, but when it is harvest season, anything goes. Check out this fun activity or simply grab your pumpkin and enjoy a few local picks from the shop. If your kids won’t let you leave with just a pumpkin and some bowling, Clark’s Farm also offers a petting zoo, huge maze, a hay mountain, face painting, moon bounce, pumpkin painting and pony rides.Â
